What Is An Eye Exam

How much does an eye exam cost at Costco?

An eye exam consists of a series of tests that measure how well you can see and how healthy your eyes are. During an eye exam, a doctor of optometry or ophthalmology will look for problems that might affect the overall health of your eyes and quality of vision. These can include eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and cataracts. How often you should have an eye exam depends on a variety of factors, including your overall risk for specific problems.

The government generally does not cover the cost of eyeglasses or contact lenses. Some vision care coverage can be obtained through Medicare Advantage or a private or group insurance plan. It is estimated that this insurance will provide coverage for only $160 per year, which is significantly less than the average price of $366 for a pair of glasses. According to Optum, the average Medicare Advantage beneficiary paid $194 for vision services in 2018. The Original Medicare beneficiary would spend $48 less on this premium. A monthly premium of around $15 or $20 is typically required for a private vision plan. Vision insurance can have certain limitations.

A basic eye exam at Costco usually costs between $50 and $100 for a comprehensive eye exam for glasses. Prices will vary based on location.

Services such as dilation, retinal imaging and contact lens fittings, if needed, can all increase the final price. Some doctors include dilation or retinal imaging in the cost of the exam, but contact lens fittings will always be at an additional fee.

According to our survey of 100 optical centers across the country:

  • a contact lens exam If you wear contact lenses, youll need to get a special exam to make sure theyre still fitting well and doing their job. These exams are usually quick and easy.

As almost all Walmart vision centers are employed by an independent doctor of optometry, who choose Walmart as their location, technically making Walmart the landlord, the prices will vary based on what the optometrist determines is the best price for his or her business. You can read about how the process works via this ReviewofOptometry.com article.

According to eye exam prices we found online, however, the costs, without any vision insurance coverage, seemed to range from anywhere from $60 to $100+ for a comprehensive basic health and vision exam to about $115 to $135+ for a basic contact lens exam. Additional fees would be charged for those who either have an astigmatism or needed a bifocal correction.

Polycarbonate with anti-scratch, UV, and anti-reflective coating starts at $100 Bifocal plastic lenses starts at $40 Bifocal polycarbonate lenses starts at $100 Progressive plastic lenses start at $100 Polycarbonate progressive lenses starts at $230 High index polycarbonate lenses start at $350
Transitions+ $40-$80

NOTE: Keep in mind that these are estimates we found online and are in no way guaranteed to be accurate. For exact pricing for your local Walmart Vision Center, we highly recommend you either visit the office in person or call them over the phone for an exact estimate for your situation. Again, each location is independently owned and the prices will not be the same across the board.

What Insurance Does Costco Optical Not Take

Interestingly, a good portion of Costco Optical centers do not accept insurance at all, but you can bill your eye care products through your insurance.

Even at Costco Optical locations that take insurance, there are a few insurance plans that are extremely rare for Costco Optical to accept.

For example, nearly no Costco Optical locations accept Humana, TRICARE, CareCredit, EyeMed Vision Benefits, Cigna Vision Insurance, WellCare, or Aetna.

Theres no harm in calling your local Costco Optical to see if they accept your insurance, even if it is one of the plans rarely accepted.

You might live next to one of the few locations that accept these rarer forms of vision insurance.

I’m thinking of changing my optometrist since Costco has a much lower price for eye examination and my benefits only cover roughly $75 for an eye exam. I ask because I have progressive lens glasses and I have an astigmatism in one eye so I want to make sure that the optometrist there is pretty good. Also are the lenses sold at Costco very good? Currently I’m using progressive Nikon lenses. How do costco lenses compare? Thanks.

Costco Eyeglasses: A Trusted Affordable Source Outside Of Medicare

Costco is a popular retailer that is known for its low prices on a variety of items, including eyeglasses. While Costco is not a medical supplier, it is considered a trusted source for affordable eyeglasses by many Medicare recipients. If you are considering purchasing eyeglasses from Costco, it is important to know that they are not covered by Medicare. However, you may be able to use your Medicare supplemental insurance to help cover the cost of your glasses.

Costco Optical is rated as the best place in the United States to buy eyeglasses by Consumer Reports. Opticians work in optical centers and provide a wide range of prescription and fashion eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses. Costco Optical, with the assistance of an independent doctor of optometry, can provide you with a vision exam without having to subscribe to a membership plan. If you have Medicare Part A or B, you must pay 100% of the cost of routine vision care. However, if you have specific eye health issues, Medicare Part B may be able to cover your eye care costs. At Costco Optical, a routine eye exam typically costs $75 to $90. Costco Optical sells the average pair of eyeglasses for $186.

The cost of single-vision lenses begins at $60 for eyeglasses, and the cost of frames ranges between $60 and $200. Costco members are not required to have their eyes examined. Aside from Costco Optical, you can also order eye care products such as saline solution.

Is Costco A Vsp Provider

According to Costco Opticals website, Costco accepts most vision insurance plans. But we had to do a little digging to find out exactly what that means.

Unfortunately, Costco is not a VSP network provider. Customers can still use Costco Optical with VSP insurance, but Costco is treated as an out-of-network provider. So, customers are responsible for submitting claims for reimbursement after receiving care.

Whats the difference between out-of-network and in-network providers?

Good question. Out-of-network means that your provider and your insurance company dont communicate. In other words, your provider wont be able to bill your insurance company directly because there is no existing relationship between the two companies. An in-network provider is a provider that has an established relationship with your insurance company and can take care of the billing process for you.

A provider being out-of-network does not have to mean that you wont be able to work with that provider. It just means youll have a little bit of extra leg work to do in order to get your care covered. To submit an out-of-network coverage claim to VSP, simply follow the steps listed on their website here.

As a side note, you might be wondering what VSP even is. Weve got you!

What You Need To Know About Medicare And Eyeglasses

According to Medicare Part A and Part B rules, glasses and other corrective lenses must be covered. Original Medicare will not normally cover prescription sunglasses, contact lenses, or eyeglasses. Eyeglasses and other corrective lenses, on the other hand, may be covered in cases where they are deemed medically necessary, such as after cataract surgery. If you need additional assistance, professional societies or charitable organizations may be able to assist you. Part B does not cover routine vision screening, eyeglasses, or contact lenses. In some cases, such as macular degeneration and cataracts, Medicare will pay for testing and treatment.
